Waxed Canvas Care Guide

Waxed canvas is one of the most durable and characterful bag materials available — but it requires a different care approach than leather. With the right routine, your waxed canvas bag will develop a beautifully worn-in look while maintaining its water resistance and structural integrity for years to come.

Everyday Cleaning

Brush off loose dirt with a soft brush or dry cloth. For light stains, use a damp cloth with cold water only — no soap or detergent, which strips the wax coating. For stubborn marks, a small amount of mild soap can be used sparingly, followed by re-waxing the affected area.

Re-Waxing

Re-wax your canvas bag once or twice a year, or when water no longer beads on the surface. Apply a thin, even layer of canvas wax (such as Otter Wax or Fjällräven Greenland Wax) with a cloth, working it into the fabric in circular motions. Use a hairdryer on low heat to help the wax penetrate evenly. Allow to cure overnight before use.

Drying

If your bag gets wet, shake off excess water and allow to dry naturally at room temperature. Never use a tumble dryer, radiator, or direct heat source — this can cause the wax to melt unevenly and damage the fabric structure.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Prolonged sun exposure can fade the canvas and dry out the wax coating. Keep stuffed with tissue paper to maintain shape, and store in a breathable bag rather than plastic.

Can I machine wash my waxed canvas bag?
No. Machine washing removes the wax coating entirely. Always hand clean with cold water and re-wax as needed to restore water resistance.

How do I know when my waxed canvas bag needs re-waxing?
When water no longer beads and rolls off the surface, or when the canvas looks dry and faded, it is time to re-wax. This typically occurs once or twice a year with regular use.

Will waxed canvas transfer wax onto clothing?
A freshly waxed bag may transfer a small amount of wax onto light-colored clothing. Allow the bag to cure fully (overnight minimum) after re-waxing before carrying it against light fabrics.
